Ditch the Box and a Quick Fix pantry item!

Pancakes are one of the first things that started making homemade and ditched the box! You might already have a standard pancake recipe, I hope so!! We were using a box until about a year ago. I have been trying to rid our cabinets of boxes and realized that pancakes are not difficult and use ingredients that we already have on hand. So why buy a box? Yes, sometimes whole food cooking is cheaper! Sadly, not always faster, but not too slow in this case. We made these…

Welcome 2015!

{{unknown}}I am reflecting today on 2014 and dreaming about 2015. A new year is very refreshing in many ways like a drink of cold water on a hot day. So many times I have said I am going to do this and that for the new year and have rules for myself that I end up breaking. I do believe that last year was the healthiest for our family’s eating habits. We have changed a lot! We also have soooo much farther that we can go. I…

Gingerbread Houses for the Hungry Huttons

I wanted to make some gingerbread houses that we could actually eat! We had made one a few years ago that just sat on the counter and got nasty and eventually trashed. Tonight we made gingerbread houses in a gingerbread house bundt pan and used some royal icing and sprinkles. I bought the cake mold after Christmas last year marked down, so I was excited about using my new pan! I used the gingerbread recipe that came with the pan. I could have made it more whole…

Get your Gadgets for Christmas!

I use my kitchen gadgets until they are falling apart and unusable. So new kitchen tools are a treat in my house! My grandmother got me an 8 quart slow cooker last Christmas and it is awesome and cheap! It was one of the only ones I could find that was eight quarts. I can really tell the difference when trying to cook more food at one time. There are more products like this that I have received/bought and enjoy. Check out my Gadget amazon store for ideas this Christmas!!  http://astore.amazon.com/hungryhuttonsgadgets-20   Some…

Easy Fixes! Updating and Unprocessing your condiments one at a time….

We are looking for simple ways to cut down on additives in our diet. I am serious SIMPLE. So this may seem obvious, but you have to start somewhere. I won’t kid you that cooking takes up the majority of my time at home. Time to spend with family and friends is in high demand for everyone so quick and simple recipes are very helpful. To make some beginning steps at removing preservatives and added unnecessary ingredients you can simply look at the shelves on the inside of your…

Don’t waste your kernels!

{{unknown}}Popcorn is one of our favorite snacks! We stopped using bagged microwave popcorn due to all of the added chemicals and preservatives, but we were missing it as a snack. I started using the folded over paper bag with kernels method, which is great, but it never came out just right in my microwave. I either had too many kernels left over or it was a little burnt. We just got this new popcorn popper. I like that this popcorn popper left NO kernels. The downside is that it does blow warm…

Freezer Granola Bars

Who doesn’t like the convenience of a granola bar? No forks, no spoons, and now no wrappers!!  My children have a granola bar almost every morning when we are heading out the door. I was buying Cascadian Farm organic granola bars. I felt like they were better than some, but they still had questionable ingredients (37 of them) and they were expensive. I searched through many recipes and couldn’t really find anything that fit the bill. This recipe was the closest one I found and I adapted it…

How to unprocess your own Chili recipe!

It’s that time of year! You probably have your own recipe for chili that you have been cooking for years, I don’t want to replace that family tradition. I do want to encourage you to look at your ingredients and see if you can actually decrease some of them! Here are some options to revamp your own chili recipe to make it less processed! You could just change one ingredient, each time you make it this winter, so it’s not overwhelming,  or go ahead and change the whole thing! I realized when I…

Are you Honest yet?

{{unknown}}These Honest products are some of our families favorite new things. My kids ask for them now! It is amazing how children react when they know that something is better for them and when they are given information about the products that we are buying for them . I feel like they are appreciative and understand that we are putting an effort into the products that we support and buy. My sweet and trusting oldest daughter (12) said once in regards to shopping, “They wouldn’t sell it if it wasn’t…

Don’t forget to wash your Hands? Please!

{{unknown}}It’s flu/cold season and one of the best things to do is to wash your hands and tell your kids to wash their hands! None of us want to get sick! The CDC recommends washing for a least 20 seconds or singing the Happy Birthday tune twice. I know that the amount of time is probably where we all cut it short, especially when we are in a rush. Getting under the finger nails and keeping the nails short, so that they can be cleaned easily…
